Maggi - sounds like you are on the right track, lots and lots of things to think about and consider before taking the leap into the cabin rental business! advertising - you will need is a website - rates, you'll need a couple of things - check the local competition - compare your amenities w/theirs what's the average? - figure you're monthly expenses (carrying costs on utilites, insurance, mortgage payments, paper products such as tp etc) whats that average? (you will need a few other figures but these will help get you started) check w/your local tourism board for additional info about their membership (how it can specifically benefit your cabin) also find out what online "reservation system" is being used in your area, insurance definately - check w/your insurance agent for a quote, hot tub? are you lake or riverfront? if no - then yes if yes then maybe (depends on what everyone else in the area has) fireplace or something to represent "warm/cozy/romantic" yes - hassle depends on several things - are you representing yourself and handling? if yes - lots of work and patience will be required, don't forget about cleaning/maintenance/reservations etc if no - you will have an additional expense of a property manager but w/o nearly as many hassles - hope that helped!! I'd like a chance to talk to some of you about the cabin rental business. If I close y baitshop, which is looking more and more inevitable every day, then one of my options is a vacation rental. I've checked with the health dept, and the visitors bureau here in Morgan Co, so I kind of know my legal requirements, but what I need to know is how to attract customers, where to find them. How much to charge, what amenities I need to offer. Is a hottub really necessary? What about insurance? Is it really worth the hassle?
