Well, I've already broken one of my New Year's Resolutions, which is to post a blog at least once a week. In fact, I had 2 or 3 composed in my head, but never even turned the computer on. I have a mundane job outside of my dream career at the baitshop, and that job has taken way too much time recently, not to mention I'm cold.
My first post of the year was something like this--
When we were kids, my mother, in a futile attempt to get us to behave at least one day, told us that what we did on New Years Day set the tone for the reast of the year. Over the years I've turned this into my own superstition. The week before New Years I try to thoroughly clean the house, so no "chores" have to be performed on that magic day. Floors are swept and mopped, laundry washed and put away, no dishes left in the drainer. The stuff that's been sitting on the kitchen table gets put away, or thrown away, whichever is appropriate. I forgot to get to the *stuff* in the fridge, I hope that isn't a bad sign. On New Years Day itself, supper is cooked in a crockpot, so I don't have to work too hard at it. The goal is that the first day of the year is work free. I also try to do a crafty or creative project. A nice walk is required, as is other exercise (I have a great collection of workout videos). This year I spent an hour or so in my ground blind, deer hunting. In recent years I've extended my superstition to include the whole first week of the year; after all, each day is a first. Until I opened the baitshop I always took the first working day of the year off work, now I come in and hope I'll make the first dollar of the year!
Now that the roads are clear and we can safely get where ever we need to go, take time to look at the beauty of the cold and snow. Just following an animal's tracks thru a fresh snowfall can lead to exciting discoveries.
